Experience the Hudson Valley's Only Fjord

Eroded by glaciers and filled by the sea, the Hudson River estuary is deepest through the narrows of the Hudson Highlands.  Join in the awe of the early sailors as you paddle from Cold Spring through the steep and looming landscape at the base of Storm King Mountain. Or launch from Beacon's waterfront to appreciate the unease sailors felt as they approached the narrow 'Northern Gate' from the north, in the days before a channel was dug and docking during a storm was easy.

But don't stop there. Hike to the ridge tops for the panoramic views coveted by both the British and American armies in the Revolutionary War.  Take it all in over a picnic lunch by the water or on a mountain top.

From Cold Spring, hike to the top of Bull Hill (Mount Taurus) for stellar views of Storm King Mountain, Constitution Marsh, West Point, Bear Mountain, and New York City on clear days.

Or hike from Beacon to the South Mount Beacon Fire Tower for a 360-view of the Hudson Highlands.  On clear days, appreciate the NYC skyline from deep within the mountains.  Then turn to look north toward the abrupt Shawangunk ridge lines and the Catskills' sexy curves —and perhaps, your next adventure.
